"(g*17.4 / number of odd days in the year * number of Thursdays since I last purchased)

G= square root of the price of gold"

Very interesting. I'm not much of numismatist so I admit that I've never seen one of those in person. How would you say it compares size-wise to a 1 gram J&M bar?

In 1889 1.672 grams of gold was equal to one dollar.

Today, one 90% silver dime is equal to one dollar.:no_ma:

There are a lot of $1 gold counterfeits out there. I wouldn't buy one that wasn't already slabbed by one of the major grading companies.

Re: $1 gold

If you remember .9675, you will remember all the old U.S. gold weights.

$20 gold coins had .9675 oz of pure gold. $10 coins had .4838, half as much. $5 coins were .2419, or 1/4 as much. Etc. So $1 gold coins had .9675/20, or .048375 oz of pure gold.

There were some very minor variations before about 1850, I believe, but those coins would all be worth more than their bullion value anyway.
